Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

IASTM (instrument –assisted soft tissue mobilization, or “scraping” as our patients sometimes refer to it) is a unique form of muscle manipulation used during an adjustment. IASTM uses specially designed stainless steel instruments with unique treatment edges and angles to deliver restoration of pain-free movement and function.

With the metal instrument specially designed for use on the skin, IASTM enables our doctors to effectively and efficiently address areas of tightness where patients feel strain, restricted mobility, or have scar tissue that is limiting motion.

To use this technique, the doctor will apply pressure with the tool (called a Graston tool or FAKTR tool) to the skin, effectively using a “scraping” motion across an area the doctor has identified as needing fascial release. Scar tissue from previous injury or overuse limits range of motion due its thickness or uneven healing in the area, and is also greatly helped by this modality. IASTM offers a positive method of manual therapy to address these issues that interrupts and breaks this cycle of pain and dysfunctional movement.

Both Dr. Crystal and Dr. Maggie are certified in IASTM. IASTM is available during your normal chiropractic visit!
