THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME
Thoracic outlet syndrome is a disorder which occurs when there is compression, injury, or irritation of the nerves and/or blood vessels in the lower neck and upper chest area. Thoracic outlet syndrome is named for the space --the thoracic outlet-- between the first rib and clavicle where this grouping of nerves and blood vessels is found.
When the blood vessels and/or nerves in the tight passageway of the thoracic outlet are compressed, they become aggravated and can cause Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Thoracic outlet syndrome can be a result of any inflammation, trauma, or injury which reduces this space for the vessels and nerves.
IT BAND SYNDROME
Many of our patients come to us seeking relief from pain or tightness in the hip, thigh and knee. Common with our runners, IT Band Syndrome occurs when the IT band (the connective tissue that extends from the outside of the hip and attaches to the outside of the knee) becomes tight with overuse and causes friction against the bone. Overuse can cause inflammation and friction with the bone, sometimes causing tiny tears along the tissue.
At DSC, many of our patients love the effects of dry needling on the body after their treatment. Many of our patients and potential patients ask, "What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?"
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese technique which works to align and clear energy channels in the body. This technique is often energetic in nature and has been used in healing the body's ailments and imbalances for centuries.
INSTRUMENT-ASSISTED SOFT TISSUE MOBILIZATION (IASTM)
IASTM (instrument –assisted soft tissue mobilization, or “scraping” as our patients sometimes refer to it) is a unique form of muscle manipulation used during an adjustment. IASTM uses specially designed stainless steel instruments with unique treatment edges and angles to deliver restoration of pain-free movement and function.
